How long something lasts, expressed in another unit. A duration, not a date: this converts a span of time, it does not add one to a calendar.
How it works
Every unit is expressed in seconds and conversions go through it. The factors are the definitions themselves: sixty seconds to the minute, sixty minutes to the hour, twenty-four hours to the day, seven days to the week.
A day is therefore exactly 86 400 seconds here. That is what the unit means, but it is not always what a calendar day is: on the mornings clocks change, a day in the affected zones lasts 23 or 25 hours. If you are working with dates rather than durations, the time and date tools handle that; this one deliberately does not.
Examples
| Case | Input | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A day in seconds | 1 d | 86,400 s |
| A week in hours | 1 wk | 168 h |
| An hour and a half | 90 min | 1.5 h |
Frequently asked questions
Why are there no months or years?
Because neither is a fixed duration. A month is 28 to 31 days and a year is 365 or 366, so a factor for either would be an average dressed up as a definition. Working out a span that involves months means working on actual dates, which is what the date calculators are for.
Is a day here the same as a calendar day?
Not always. This page converts the unit, which is exactly 86 400 seconds. A calendar day is 23 or 25 hours when the clocks change, and the difference is precisely the sort of thing that breaks a booking system.
Good to know
- Every factor used here is an exact definition rather than a rounded measurement, so the only error in a result is the one that comes from displaying it with a finite number of digits.
- Months and years are not offered, because neither has a fixed length. Use the date tools for spans that involve them.
