Tip Calculator
Work out a tip, the total, and what each person owes when the bill is split.

Bill 50.00
Tip 10.00 % +5.00
Total with tip 55.00
Each person pays
55.00
- Tip per person
The tip is a percentage of the bill, the total is the two added, and the split is the total divided by the number of people. All of it in one place, at the table, without doing it twice.
How it works
The tip is taken on the bill as it stands. Where service or tax is already included in the printed total, tipping on that figure tips on the tax too; enter the amount before it if you would rather not.
Examples
| Case | Input | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A bill split four ways | 86.40, 15% tip, 4 people | 24.84 each |
| One diner, ten per cent | 50, 10% tip, 1 person | 55.00 in total |
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
That depends entirely on where you are, and this tool will not tell you, because customs differ from country to country and change over time. It computes the percentage you choose.
Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?
Both are done in practice. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the stricter reading; tipping on the total is simpler and slightly more generous. Enter whichever figure you mean to tip on.
Good to know
- Amounts carry no currency: the answer is in whatever you put in.
- Results use double precision floating point arithmetic. That is exact enough to decide with and is not an accounting record.
